Parquet wood flooring

Parquet wood flooring is a truly timeless look and looks beautiful in both traditional and modern homes. Although traditional floors and woods like Tueque /Oak and Walnut is still a very popular choice of block, more fashionable tones, like back or white have become very popular of late especially with Interior Designers. White is the new black, and it can be achieved in many varying tones and shades.

But due to the heavy process of firstly, sorting the sub floors out, (it cannot be laid directly to normal sub-straights, and would traditionally have the very unpopular seemly bitumen base laid first). Nowadays modern materials and methods are quicker and much healthier, but it must have a suitably prepared sub floor before the blocks can be laid, then sanded, and colouring, before the final finishing top coat can be applied. This is traditionally with lacquering with a very high quality lacquer of a matt finish. The finish we use is of a supreme quality which we also use on sports floors chosen for its durability and hardiness.

Traditionally parquet is often found in churches and old school halls as if laid correctly it will last for hundreds of years and can be restored to its former glory through restoration processes.

Sub floor preparation is always key to the laying of any floor and at Dijon Home & Flooring we always make sure we carry out all appropriate moisture checks at each stage of the process and that the sub floor is prepared correctly.

If you are using reclaimed blocks you should scrape all of the parquet blocks to remove any residue bitumen or glue it is imperative that all of the blocks are cleaned of residue to give a good even finish.

They then need to be staked in the property at least 2 weeks prior to laying, dependant on the time of year, the type of property they are going in and the moisture content in the blocks, in order for them to acclimatise properly, they should be stacked in small piles in order for the air to flow around the parquet blocks.

The blocks once laid can be finished in a colour to suit the individual’s needs.
